OET test format?

OET language test evaluates the performance of the candidate under four critical criteria which are listening, reading, writing and speaking. A 45-minute listening test is followed by a 60-minute reading test. The writing tests last 45 minutes and it is the Last test in this order. The speaking test, which will last 20 minutes, will be administered in the afternoon, around 1 p.m.

Format of the test

  • The listening test is made of 3-parts testing different skills. Part A is based on patient consultation. It requires you to answer 24 questions and also includes note completion as the task. Part B and Part C are based on short audio extracts from a healthcare work area and extracts from presentations respectively. All sub-tests of listening include a total of 42 multiple-choice questions (MCQ).
  • The reading is a 60 minutes test containing matching and sentence completion as the tasks in Part A, followed by MCQ in Part B and Part C of reading. It must be noted that Part A is a quick reading task and is strictly timed. The latter are a careful reading tasks seeking to ascertain the candidate’s ability to understand the main point and find out the implied or explicit meaning respectively.

This is the only task, and the candidate has only 40 minutes to finish the letter, with the first 5 minutes spent reading and going over the case notes.

  • The writing test requires the candidate to write a letter based on the case notes provided of a patient. The letter could be aa referral letter, transfer letter, discharge letter, letter of advice or a (complaint) response letter. This is the only task, and the candidate has only 40 minutes to finish the letter, with the first 5 minutes spent reading and going over the case notes. The response is checked for its purpose, content, clarity and Conciseness, organization and layout, genre and style and for its language accuracy.
  • The speaking test is based on role-playing and the candidate has to enact two role cards, each lasting 5 minutes. The candidate will take up the role of the health professional and the interlocutor (the person who will help you enact the role play) will take up the role as a patient, a patient’s relative or carer, or a client. This test recreates the scenario of your everyday workplace and checks your ability to communicate effectively with the patient or a colleague.

What distinguishes the OET from other language tests?

There are many English Language Proficiency tests but most of them are for a general audience. In other words, anyone irrespective of their professional background can attend the same test. However, in the case of OET, the test is specifically designed for medical professionals. The test assess the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in English in a general healthcare scenario which is however, limited to the specialization of the candidate. Thus a medical or healthcare professional can easily identify the test scenario from his/ her professional education as well as everyday work experience. This characteristic makes OET highly favourable among healthcare workers.

The OET is an English Language Test that is suggested for all health care workers who wish to relocate to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Singapore, and Namibia. Candidates who have previously tried IELTS but did not get the necessary score may find OET significantly less difficult because it deals with scenarios they are already familiar with. English proficiency is not assessed based on general knowledge, and applicants are not required to compose essays or discuss random topics they are unfamiliar with.

Here at EduconnectAcademie, we provide one-on-one sessions, and the classes are tailor-made to suit individual needs. We first test every student’s basic skills and structure the classes to address their weak zones. Once ready, students can attend regular mock tests to know where they stand and further improve themselves.
