General Information about IELTS.

The International English Language Testing System - IELTS is a test that evaluates a candidate`s ability to communicate in English in four areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

The IELTS exam is jointly owned by IDP Australia, the British Council, and the Cambridge ESOL Examinations division. The British Council and the IDP are in charge of carrying out the examinations all around the world.

The type of IELTS, be it Academic or General Training, depends on your reason for taking up the test. Candidates are scored in full and half bands across the four modules and also given an overall band score.  A zero-band score is considered to be the least and 9-band is the highest score on offer.

IELTS has no pass or fail in the test and your band score requirement will depend on your reason for taking the test. Most universities abroad require a minimum score ranges from 6 bands to 7 bands for enrolment into their graduate or post-graduate courses. In most countries, the minimum requirement for healthcare professionals, such as nurses, is band 7. However, some countries have lowered the cut-off to 6.5 bands in the writing module alone.

Format of IELTS evaluation

The International English Language Testing System - IELTS test starts with the listening test lasting for 40 minutes followed by the reading test lasting 60 minutes. The writing test is also 60 minutes. The speaking test lasts for 11- 14 minutes, and is mostly scheduled, a few days ahead of the test date. This makes the total duration of the IELTS test 2 hours and 40 minutes for LRW (listening, speaking and writing), and another 14 minutes for speaking.
